Angry Birds

Postby Nobody » August 20th, 2011, 1:14 am

Well aekara tried making one and it didn't come out well and i said i'd give it a try. So here it is. This is just a demo of what i'm trying for the really early stages. In the actual game i'll add a bigger room to launch in, make the slingshot sprite better, and more levels and so on, add adjustable height and power based on how you stretch the slingshot. Like i said, this is an early stage so there is room for minor enhancements.

CONTROLS: Tap and hold down the bird to aim and release to shoot. Pull back the slingshot to adjust your shooting angle and power. The objective is to kill the green pig, so knock down the blocks and hit that thing! After the bird has landed, tap the screen to get another rethrow. Press start at any time to reload the room. The black shadow of the bird shows where you last aimed.

Let me know how you like the new physics engine and what not. The physics aren't perfect since i don't really know physics or how to simulate it properly, so give me some credit for doing as much as i did. (note: blocks won't fall unless all blocks are removed from underneath them). If you guys got any level layout ideas, new ideas, or anything you'd like to see then let me know.

UPDATE: 3 more levels added. There is no winning or losing, or bird limits. Just defeat all the pigs to continue on. Press start to start from the begging again. I fear as this may be my last update for now as i prepare to go back to school and do other crap i need to get done, so farewell.

P.S. Do you think the bouncing needs some more tweaking?

Pretty impressive! The mechanics are smooth and it looks promising!

thanks. I want the block falling to be smoother though, it's possible but i'm not sure if i'm going to do it or just make it fall faster to make it smoother.

edit* just looked at it, maybe you could add more frames?

i think the falling speed is just too fake. It needs to be sped up. I'm thinking bitshifted gravity like the bird, but it may cause problems if blocks drop from a high place. I might just speed up the falls a bit.

yeah I wouldnt do anything that would mess it up later that could cause mass frustration! speeding it up sounds simple and good

Wish I had time to make a version of Angry Birds on the DS. I'd know exactly how to make the controls.
As for everything else, well... :P

What you've done is great though, you could make at least 30 levels based on what you've done.

You should really improve this with real physics. So when you shoot the bird you should know the force on it horizontally and vertically (x and y). Then make gravity work and a little friction.

Forget about the bitshift gravity. Someone (I think it was Chris) started with saying everyone should use it and then everyone did. Without knowing what bitshifts actually do. Just get the vertical speed and make it a little less every frame. So you know what you're doing. They need to be floats, decimal numbers, though.

About the blocks. That'll be the hardest part. It's really hard to make such a collision system working. In Angry Birds it's done pretty realistically. That's just really hard to do.

Good luck with your project!

I've been learning quite a lot in Physics lately, and something I've been learning about is momentum, or more specifically transfer of momentum, known as impulse. In layman's terms, I'm learning the mathematical side of how objects move when they smash into each other (and also when they explode, but that's later).

Also, I did find some time for a fling control demo. Grab the ball, pull back, and let go. FLING!
Press select to reset.
I am using bitshifts, but that's because I know how to use them. You can probably tell if you try the demo.

your demo runs pretty smoothly. I might take a look at it to see how i might finish making mine. I have an idea how i was going to do it, but yours looks better than something i might have been able to do on my own

@jan: Thank you jan, and i might try using floats instead. I never understood bitshifts, i just know that's how it works and that's pretty much it, so i don't really know too much about tweaking it. So i might play around with floats. I've never used floats before, but it shouldn't be hard. And yes jan, the blocks are incredibly hard. It took me like 3 hours or so to get that far with them, and it was frustrating. With this thought i should be able to make a few more blocks. I was thinking about making the glass blocks (or whatever the blue block is, ice, whatever it is) and stone blocks to give it some more variation. Making the glass and stone blocks would be easy because the stone blocks don't really move (and i'll make them probably not move or move very sligthly) and then the glass blocks pretty much break on contact. Wish me luck guys!

i'm debating on how far i want to take this project. I'm not sure if i just want to make a few small levels, or continue adding new block and birds types and more levels.

pretty hard. I already had a good foundation on how i was going to do it, but actually putting it together was harder than i originally though. To add on to it won't be near as hard, might give me a medium size challenge. The hard part was just getting everything set up so all the values would match up nicely with graphics and have everything run semi smoothly.

thank you very much for the compliment. I haven't had much free time lately to do anything DSGM related, so maybe in a week or two i'll have just a little bit of time to make some really quick levels or something. i'm not going to take this project very far though because i have a long list of things in need to do in life and in DSGM
