The Chronicle: Episode 1

Postby zenathil » September 8th, 2011, 6:33 pm

This game is a rpg with turn based combat. To save time I'm implementing JanMulder's RPGlib for the movement. So far there is no major progress, I have a temporary overworld set up and working and some placeholder graphics.

The Story
The story behind the episode one of the game is that long ago a group of powerful mages created this world to be a haven for mages and a bridge between the many worlds in existence. They created a generator underground below the nexus that serves as the heart of this artificial world. This generator creates and maintains the magical barrier protecting the world from the void that contains it and is surrounded by a smaller barrier to prevent unauthorised access. The generator draws on the key locations connected to the nexus to help stabilize and maintain the shield. One day two people with the potential to become powerful mages arrive in this world with no memory. The two meet the librarian of the arcane library of the nexus and are told that a powerful wizard plans to take the outer shield down destroying the nexus and the magical world leaving only himself and the core with its shield intact and maintained serving as his base of operations as he sets about asserting dominance over the many worlds of existence. You are the one that will protect this land or potentially destroy it.

There are going to be random encounters on the overworld and inside the dungeons there are going to be enemied that when you run into it starts the combat, like in Lufia and similar rpgs. I'll try to make time to work on this as often as possible and I'll try to keep this thread updated often.

Hopefully it won't be too long until I have an alpha release ready.

Edit
Okay I have a pre-alpha release ready, it shows the basics of the combat system and a few simple spells. For the alpha release it's going to have the nexus at least mostly completed and the tutorial will be polished up a bit. The pre-aplha is more to show the concepts of the spells and give an indication of how the tutorial will go. Feedback and constructive criticism is appreciated.

Progress
  • Movement (completed thanks to JanMulder's RPGlib)
  • Tutorial(Mostly done, needs polishing)
  • Battle System
  • Save/Load System
  • Leveling System
  • Scaling System
I'll add more to this list and update it as things come up.

Just wanted to say congrats on the professional looking project post. Looks really nice.

Looking forward to seeing your game. What kind of graphics will you be using?

At the moment it's just going to be simple graphics made mostly in paint apart from the sprites which currently I'm using placeholder sprites from lufia 2 for the monsters. I should probably explain the scaling system better too, instead of the monsters just getting stronger as your progress they'll also evolve so that instead of people swearing at their ds because a little lizard just killed them they'll be fighting a dinosaur or something.

Once I have made the battle engine I'll make the intro scene for the game and release a demo.

Think carefully about the graphics when planning your engine. Quality over quantity, but having more monsters with evolutions even if not animated will require plenty of art, I like how the scaling system sounds but be careful not to bite off more than you can chew if you want the project to be a success. :)

Also it appears you are working on a tutorial before completing the battle/levelling/scaling systems which are pretty integral to your games 'engine', a bit counter intuitive- tutorials and 'how to plays' are good to leave till the end as much of a project can change/not work out exactly as planned etc. Once you have a battle system up this will feel a lot more 'under development' by you than an extension of Jans great work. Looking forward to your progress :)

With the art I'm planning on eventually outsourcing it because at the moment it's going to be a trilogy and when it's done I was going to remake it for the iOS. I haven't fully decided if i want it to scale as you level or as you defeat the bosses, I'm leaning more towards bosses. I haven't decided on the number of monsters yet either, maybe 3 in each dungeon and a boss. BTW I read the three pages of retro quest and it looks pretty good how often are you planning on updating it?

Cool beans, take it slow, get the first one done well and then move on to the others/iOS, and good luck! I'll be updating it every fortnight is the plan, cheers for checking it out!
