Challenge #1: My Lil' Platformer

Postby cilein » March 25th, 2011, 4:56 pm

Hey guys, welcome to the first challenge thread.

The challenges I introduce here are for fun, to build our skills in all areas of game development and get everyone to try thinking outside the box. Each challenge will test different skills with restrictions you have to work within.

Image

This goal is to create your own little platformer, starring you as the protagonist. You will have to come up with a basic excuse for you to be the main character, and you may only have abilities you have in real life. This means in terms of the movement (and attacks if you add them) etc, you must be realistic - if you can't jump twice your own height... you will need to take advantage of ladders etc). See how interesting a plot you can come up with to explain why you are the hero of the game. Everything else about the game/setting can be as imaginative as you like.

For this challenge you will need:
Story: A few sentences to introduce the scene
Sprite: Yourself as a side-on character 32x32 pixels max. You will need an idle pose, and frames for running and jumping. (You can build on more later if you wish)
Background: One scene, doesn't need to scroll, to be the starting 'room' in your game. You can use multiple layers if you wish. It must have a floor and some platforms to jump to/on.
Sound: Optional (Sound effects for footsteps, jumping, hitting a wall etc or a tune to set the scene)
Programming: You must program one room, in which your character can walk/run about, and jump on platforms.

Bonus challenge: Add a health system, and a way to get hurt (eg enemies, traps or fall damage)

Take this challenge for fun, and as an opportunity to develop your skills in making games. Focus on making a simple platform engine with the requirements above before trying to expand to have attacks, inventory, armour, stamina etc. Cut scenes etc are not required.

Some inspiration;

That is complex, but good for smooth animation, you can use as few as 2 frames to make a character run, look at mario in the older games - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZtEwszTg2o&feature=related

Post your WIP resources, problems, ideas and discussion here. You can post completed challenges as topics in the 'Just for Fun thread', add [Challenge #1] before the title to keep things organized. There is no time limit, and you may work in groups to create your resources and do your programming!

Have fun!

Nice to see these new ideas Cilein! I hope you don't mind that I'm not participating I'm currently a bit busy with my own game, Bloxorz, which is getting greater and greater. It automatically updates the nds file from the internet (WiFi) and it is also able to download levels!

Ah, so this was your idea to help the forum. I'll post my finished platformer engine soon. Maybe it'll be helpful for someone :)

EDIT:
The latest version of my platformer engine can be found here viewtopic.php?f=6&t=393#p4352

You'll need to search the forum for Mango's custom action "Get BG Color".
Seriously never posting again, lawlz.

Lucky for me, I CAN jump twice my height and also punch things so hard they instantly die and disintegrate, So this won't really be all that constricting. I've also been known to spit fireballs and melt rocks with my laser eyes.

Occasionally, ... As well as, inhale other people just to steal their special abilities, while wearing a pink marshmallow costume. I frequently curl up into a small Blue ball and roll around at the speed of sound, and on the rarest of occasions I've actually magically stuck to walls with my ninja skills and unleashed a barrage of flaming shurikens and froze time by turning an hour glass on it's side.

So if I make something and it seems unlikely that I can actually do something within the game, I assure you that I probably can.

Welp, started by making a sprite of myself. Now I just gotta animate it and come up with a story of some sort...

lol thungbard :P, go for it then ;)

.bmp bobby? :O

I have a platform engine I wrote in September in 4.9, think I'll try and rewrite in in v5 now and fix up - finally got sandboxie to help me load up projects, but I have to test them externally as Sandboxie screws compile-and-play :P.

Just filesize and palette reasons for me being against bmp haha, any progress on the sprite?

I made a walk cycle animation as a template and possibly an enemy for mine, could do with a tweak or two yet I'm sure. I'll add a tad of head bob later.

I animated my sprite to walk as well as made a very simple first level to my game so that I could work some more stuff out. Your animation puts mine to shame xD

Tweaked your animation a bit, it was bothering my eyes with his forward thrusts.

Haha thanks, I wrote a platformer engine a while back and have wanted to come back and remake one again now that my programming and pixel art has improved. You're diploma is a great excuse to focus in on and get amazing skills at a lot of the important aspects of game making, as annoying as it is I bet it'll be part of what makes your games epic ;). My degree isn't related whatsoever to art or programming, finding the time can be an absolute nightmare but needs to be done :D
