Ink Racer

Postby WillWill56 » Sat Apr 18, 2009 8:45 am

I have started work on an actual game, rather than trying to get miscellaneous features working in DSGM.
As the title suggests it is going to be a hand-drawn-style racing game, I already have basic menus and ideas of how it will work.
I have not actually done much for the actual game, the really amazing thing that I have done is actually a sort of Easter egg.
Using the demo nds file attached to this post, run it on your DS and wait until the menu appears.
Instead of choosing one of the three empty tracks, tap the circle in the bottom right corner.
It will switch to a rather empty screen with one lonely circle that can be moved with the D-Pad. But it has nothing to do with the "Move sprite with D-Pad" action!
It has a full physics engine, inertia, friction and all! [Note: there is no collision, because there is nothing for it to collide with]
It's a little tech demo to keep you distracted while I make the real game.

I'm pretty much going solo on this, accepting applications only for idea personnel.
The main thing I need help with is how to make an engine noise and whether it should even be a real engine sound or the sound of a squeaky permanent marker.
Suggestions for types of scenery would be helpful.

I won't keep you reading any longer. Here is the download:

Nice transitions.

If anyone wants an idea on how the demo was made, check out viewtopic.php?f=42&t=1242&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

EEE (Easter Egg Engine)

Postby WillWill56 » Sat Apr 18, 2009 1:05 pm

I did something a little different, and I used floating point numbers too.
I managed it without custom actions, if that's what you're wondering.

If you want to see how I did it, I can PM you the .xds file if you want. Just ask!

Yes its easy to do without custom actions. Fixed point math is the way to go with acceleration and friction type effects.

I've made some progress.

Well... mainly I've made the road. 4 sprites that scale as they move towards you (uses some cheeky algorithms).
The road demo is in track 1, it uses fake 3D and inertia as well as some other speed to scale things. I haven't done corners yet.
A to accelerate, B to brake, steering is left and right but there is no sprite to steer so it's just changing the steering variables.
This game is still sorta a tech demo, I look forward to putting some cars on the road, trees and grass tufts on the side, obstacles etc..
Anyway, I was going to put in an update function, where it could check if it was outdated (but you had to download the update manually).
I tried compiling it with my reliable WiFi actions and got an error regarding to undefined functions. So PAlib has changed a lot and my actions are unusable.
Also, I noticed that the actions and WiFi demo I posted a while back were eaten by the server because it hates RAR archives.
I'll attach the nds demo of that as well, but the actions are outdated.
To prove that it's using real WiFi, tell me something to write on the "primitive website".

Anyway, after all my rambling, here are the downloads:

This looks similar to what I was thinking of doing. I was going to remake Night Driver or Enduro from atari.
http://www.atariguide.com/menu/2600alphaframe.htm

Nice idea using different length lines to give the 3D effect.

I got a message when using the wifi.

Are you able to post the actions for the wifi? Can you send as well as receive to make like an online score board?

It is just a fixed version of the Get Web Response action from DSGM 1 Registered. Nothing to do with sending messages on sockets to IPs, althought I could try making some actions for that.
There is also a Refresh Web Response, because the Get Web Response declares a WiFi Buffer.
I'll post them, but recently the Init WiFi action from DSGM 1 registered actions has stopped working (due to PAlib changes it seems...)
If you don't have the Init WiFi action from the original DSGM registered actions pack, I can PM it to you (If you're registered)

PS: Run the WiFi demo again, I added a message on my primitive website.

I just hope the forums didn't empty the contents of my zip file into its mouth... lol

There should be stuff below that...

OK apparently when I edit the txt file, it only stays like that for 1 download, then... I dunno. Watch the space below, I'll edit and say when I've fixed it.

This topic should be of interest to you too: http://forum.palib.info/index.php?topic=6522.0

Quite surprised the old PAlib HTTP functions worked for you Eldude.

Just reminding you that it is the Init WiFi action that is causing the problem, not the Get Web Response and it is PAlibs fault (If you're using the latest DSGM and PAlib). My demo was compiled using DSGM 2.2 and whatever version PAlib was linked in the install instructions at the time.

Also if you're getting errors relating to a variable already declared or something, make sure you did not use Get Web Response more than once on the same WiFi buffer. Once you have created and filled a WiFi buffer using Get Web Response, use Refresh Web Response to overwrite the buffer with a newer version of the website or a different website. Also, declaring a global or room global is not needed, Get Web Response creates the WiFi buffer, and in the right format, which can be used in the same room over and over again.
